Koundjourou
Location
Chad
In 2021, an aerial survey revealed a previously undocumented population of critically endangered kordofan giraffes in central Chad. This subspecies, with fewer than 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild, faces imminent threats. Subsequent collaborative aerial surveys, conducted with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, Wild Africa Conservation, and the Chadian government, confirmed a population exceeding 50 giraffes, establishing it as the country's third-largest. These surveys also documented a diverse assemblage of other wildlife, including ostrich, spotted hyena, striped hyena, and red-fronted gazelle. Recognizing the ecological significance of this discovery, the Chadian government is now evaluating the establishment of a new Wildlife Reserve in the area.
